Ballroom
It includes standard dances such as the fox-trot, waltz, polka, tango, Charleston, jitterbug, and merengue. Ballroom dance was popularized by Vernon and Irene Castle and Fred Astaire and, later, by Arthur Murray (1895 – 1991), who established ballroom dance studios throughout the U.S. Ballroom dance contests, especially popular in Europe, feature both amateur and professional dancers.
Swing
Social dance form dating from the 1940s. Danced in the U.S. to swing music, the dance steps have distinct regional variations, including forms such as the West Coast swing, the East's jitterbug-lindy, the South's shag, and in Texas the push (Dallas) and the whip (Houston). Performance versions include extreme athletic moves that distinguish them from everyday social swing dance. Though swing dance had largely disappeared by 1960, a revival began in the late 1980s and has since spread widely.
Latin
Latin dance includes a wide range of dances originating in Latin America and Cuba. Examples include the Cha-cha-cha, Rumba, Samba, Salsa, Mambo, Danza, Merengue, Tumba, Bachata, Cumbia, and Bolero. Some also include tango and Argentine Tango in this list, although they differ from the rest in their style. In Argentina tango is not considered folk dance as is the case with dances like chacarera, gato, escondido and zamba. Typical Bolivian folk dances are morenada, kullawada, llamerada, caporales and the recently created tinku. In Colombia one of the typical dances is the cumbia.

Shag
The Shag does not have a clear timeline, and there are many possible theories for exactly how it came to be and who created it. There is even some confusion about where it started, though it is generally believed to have begun on or near the beaches of the Grand Strand and Lower Cape Fear. Like many art forms, the Shag probably evolved over a period of years. The articles below have accurate, honest descriptions of the dance's history.
Hip-Hop
Hip-hop dance refers to social or
choreographed dance styles primarily danced to
hip-hop music or that have evolved as part of
hip-hop culture . This includes a wide range of styles notably
breaking ,
locking , and
popping which were developed in the 1970s by Black Americans. What separates hip-hop dance from other forms of dance is that it is often
freestyle (
improvizational ) in nature and hip-hop dancers frequently engage in
battles —formal or informal freestyle dance competitions. Informal freestyle sessions and battles are usually performed in a
cipher , a circular dance space that forms naturally once the dancing begins. These three elements—freestyling, battles, and ciphers—are key components of hip-hop dance.
